As the first Latin American pope, Pope Francis repeatedly denounced poverty and corruption while seemingly softening some of the Catholic Church’s longtime positions during his 12 years leading the Vatican. He died on Easter Monday at the age of 88 following a stroke, sparking an outpouring of tributes from across the globe.
