There are many important things to understand when fasting during the holy month of Ramadan to be able to take the maximum benefit from the wisdom and teachings we may gain during this blessed month. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stated that – Don’t the day of fasting be the same as the day you don’t fast. Drawing Closer to Allah – This is attained by reciting and reflecting on the Holy Quran during the day and night, attending the taraweeh prayers, remembering Allah, and sitting in circles for knowledge.

Another way this may be achieved is my making l’tikaf in the last 10 nights of Ramadan, in which all worldly pursuits are forgotten and you are secluded in the masjid to give full thoughts to the greatness of Allah. 3. Acquiring Patience and Strong Will- Allah mentions patience more than 70 times in the Quran and commands patience in more than 16 of his ways. When we fast, we give up or food and drink, relations for many hours, and we learn restraint and patience.

4. Striving for Ihsan and staying away from Riya- Ihsan means worshiping Allah as if you seek him even though you cannot see him. When one is fasting one should gain the quality of thinking before making any action and staying away from Riya (showing off). Allah singles out fasting from other worships as he says fasting is from me, no one knows whether you are fasting except Allah. 5. Refinement of Manners – The prophet (PBUH) said whoever does not abandon falsehood in word and action, then Allah has no need for him to leave his food and drink.

We must pay attention to the purification of our manners especially during this month. 6. Recognizing change for the better – The Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Every son of Adam sins and the best of the sinners are those who repent. ” Allah provides many opportunities to repent to Him and seek His forgiveness. If one was disobedient they can become obedient 7. Being more Charitable – The Propet PBUH was the most charitable amongst the people and was even more during Ramadan when Angel Jibril met him every night of the month.

The prophet said that he who give for a fasting person to break his fast will receive the same reward as the person receiving the food. 8. Sensing the Unity of Muslims – In this month we sense that there is a possibility for unity, because we all fast together, we break the fast together, we all worship Allah together, and we pray Eid Salat together.. Therefore we must all be united as a single body, but this can only be achieved when there is obedience only for Allah and his messenger. . Learning Discipline – The prophet mad us obey to disciplineOne cannot knowingly break the fast before sunset as it will be not accepted by Allah. Muslims should learn to be strict in our lives as we are the people of an important message. 10. Special Facts about Ramadan: Special Characteristics of Ramadan 1. Observing the fourth pillar of Islam has been prescribed during this month, and it is one of the best means by which a person attains piety and forgiveness of sins. 2. The first revelation of the Qur’an as guidance for humanity was given to the Prophet (pbuh) during this month. 3. The sunnah of performing the tarawih prayer is observed during this month. 4. Ramadan contains Laylatul-Qadr, which is better than a thousand months. 5. The great battle of Badr between the Muslims and the unbelievers took place during Ramadan in the second year of the Hijrah. 6. The Muslims re-entered Makkah victorious during Ramadan in the eighth year of the Hijrah.

After this conquest people began to enter the fold of Islam in multitudes, and Makkah became free of polytheism and evil. We are ordered to take care of our health and provide our body with its rights over us. Our prophet, (Peace and blessings be upon him), told us our body has rights on us and in one hadith he said, “The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, and there is good in everyone. ” Sahih Muslim Make du’a for us while you are fasting -please, Insha’Allah. May Allah accept your fasting and put you in His Jannah, ameen.
