Sexy Beast is a crime film directed by Jonathan Glazer and written by Louis Mellis and David Scinto. It stars Ray Winstone, Ben Kingsley and Ian McShane. The storyline follows Gal Dove, a retired ex-gangster who made his fortune in an illegal way. There also a sense of a comedic atmosphere to this sequence that is shown through the performance of actors. Even the title of the movie registered as more of a comedic movie that typical gangsta’s film. Sexy Beast was the beginning of a new phase for Jonathan Glazer of working with first time with filmmakers.
He used to create a music video and tv programs for UK television and his background make Sexy beast opening title look really unique and aesthetically pleasing.
The audience get introduced to the main character man – rich, jerk, Anti-hero that we can establish from how he treats his house boy. Man lives in a very desolate area, this suggesting that he may be hiding from someone dangerous or something that he might have done at some point.
He lives in a very posh house, but he himself doesn’t seem like a rich person, therefore suggesting that he has got a lot of money somehow, but maybe not in the right way.
Landscape and house signify worm climate. Because of the accent of the main character we can assume that events take place in Spain due to the movement that happened in the 80s between England and Spain that involved gangstas. This gives us also an idea about the time period the film was set.
Although film as shoot in 2000, we clearly looking at the piece set in the 1980s relaying on clothes, car, and music.
Views also meet 2 other characters – the pool boy and a woman driving in a car. We are not too sure who the woman is , but because there is a clip of two hearts in the pool next to the man indicates that she has some sort of relationship with the main guy. Judging by the fact that she is also driving away from us, we can make a guess that she is driving towards the other guy.
When the boulder rolls down the hill at the end he doesn’t seem very surprised by it which may indicate that he is used to violence, which may suggest he is in an industry that involves a lot of it. But that the same time boulder metaphor means that something is going to happen. ( probably bad )
The music is very lighthearted, although during a lot of the opening sequence the main character is talking. Music represents the 1980s during which the events of this film take place. soundtrack- stranglers peaches by the Stranglers was recorded in 1977.
