Humans are complicated. They are too individualistic and unpredictable. Naturally, humans are selfish by nature and tend to do what is beneficial for them before helping others. That is why one can never determine who will retaliate and some people are just evil and will do harm regardless of gaining anything. In other words, self-preservation comes before bettering society as a whole. This relates back to who holds power over these individuals. When that semblance of power is threatened, violence comes into play.

Violence is any act that inflicts pain whether it be emotional or physical. In an emotional sense, the individual is being attacked verbally with crudeness that is akin to being physically assaulted. The wounds that are sustained are internal. Then there is violence that provokes or unleashes an emotion within an individual to use physical force to create an intended effect among others. It’s like the saying action speaks louder than words. The other definition associated with violence is that it is a physical force or threat of physical force towards another human being.

If we refer back to WWII when Hitler invade Berlin and the citizens fought back by bombing the factories, we can say that is not violent in the sense that they wanted their autonomy back. They were not destroying government property of the Nazis, rather they were taking back their property.

What constitutes as violence may vary depending on the tactic employed to achieve a desired effect. In today’s society, violence is used everywhere and almost on a pandemic scale.

It makes one wonder if so much violence is necessary for an economy to function. Although people have good morals, values, and intentions there are people who are capable of committing offensive crimes. Naturally, humans are selfish by nature and tend to do what is beneficial for them before helping others. That is why when nonviolence does not work, resorting to violence to achieve justice is necessary.

Attempts to raise awareness of this crime is difficult due to the very abusive nature the oppressor has on the victim. It is difficult to counter due to wrongful arrests and exposure by the media.

In today’s society, violence is used everywhere and almost on a pandemic scale. It makes one wonder if so much violence is necessary for an economy to function. But to acquire justice, violence is sometimes used as a physical privilege. Physical privilege is the other side of oppression where society grants privilege to a certain group of individuals due to certain aspects of their identity. Violence in a sense is aggression against another individual through physical contact that requires force to be used. However, violence can be used innately as a mean of self-defense to reduce the harm inflicted on another or oneself from another. Therefore, violence is not good nor is it bad. It falls in the between when it is justifiable to use depending on the reasoning behind the tactic, which may come into question by authorities or those with power. However, proponents of violence will argue that it is not necessary to achieve justice. On the other hand, nonviolence has been used throughout history to achieve social justice. Therefore, violence is justifiable when methods of nonviolence render it ineffective.

Nonviolence has been made popular by Gandhi who believed the ends do not justify the means. The gap between violence and nonviolence played a prominent role in ending Britain’s stronghold over India. However, one must consider the violence committed by Gandhi to his own body. He practically damaged his nervous system by reducing his overall food consumption to strengthen his mind and reaffirm his belief.

The need for violence is depicted in Robert F. Williams’s book “Negroes with Guns” the African American community tried nonviolent methods such as picketing and reporting to the authorities and even had the Freedom Riders come to aid them were ineffective. However, the casualties they got on top of being hurt by the racism in the South and by racist groups such as the KKK The only option left was to bear arms and truly practice self-defense. Only then were they left alone and not beat up unjustly.
