Should Every American Go to College Free Essay Example
Who decides if we should go to college? We live in this world that convinces people that college is the right thing to do. This society today has painted this clear picture, that if you do not attend college, you would always live a life of struggle. There are those who attend college to have a better life and also to receive that higher education. On the other hand, you have those who are force to attend college that barely made it out of high school.
However, you do have does advocates that encourage people to attend college.
This point of view promotes that college would allow you to have a better life, a great job, and become financial stable. People who are advocating that college is the right thing does not stress the issue that those attending college requires one to be focus, responsible as well as dedicated to learn . There are other options than college to have a better life.
It is also my contention that college is not for everyone and there are other options, like on the job training or picking up a trade that does not require a four-year college degree.
True enough people have their different point of views about college. Yes, people should have that option to attend college, only if you are going for the benefits of advancing your education. You should not go because you want to get away from your struggles in life or just lazy and do not want to work.
Let’s face it “there are too many students enrolled in school who simply do not belong there” ( Pharinet 635). “Society plays a part in pushing students into college classrooms.
We need to start to distinguishing between the right to an education, and the benefits of an education“(Pharinet 636). Somehow, when there are many students who attend college for the first time, they tend to have this carefree attitude. They some how think they are still in high school and the classes are challenging, but still easy. Students feel that they can miss class and still be successful. “Students who cannot follow complex arguments accurately are not really learning“(Murray 631). They are taking away a mish-mash of half-understood information and outright misunderstandings that probably leave them under the illusion that they know something they do not” (Murray 631). All the expenses that they have to acquire overwhelm many students that attend college. When this occurs, they tend to dropout, or struggle with taking on college courses and working. What is so amazing is that high school athletes think that is they attend college for a year or two, they can go on and make a career on a professional level.
They do not understand that if they do go professional, it will not always last. They will eventually have to go to college anyway. So, why not go ahead, get a good education, and have a successful career. A four-year college is a serious deal for some students, but if you cannot accept the challenge, then it is okay to enroll into a two-year college or vocational school. Some two year colleges teach the same courses, but in a less amount of time.
In addition, even if you do attend a four-year college, one would still require some sort of certification in some of the occupations that they would make out of a career. “Large numbers of those who are intellectually qualified for college also do not yearn for four years of college-level courses“(Murray 632). Many of the students that go to four-year colleges go because of pressure. It could be pressure by their parents or because they want make goals like their classmates and their future goals.
