Over the course of many men and women’s military career sexual assault has been a major issue. Why is sexual assault an issue when we teach our soldiers the importance of sexual assault how to prevent it? Well the issues come in all shapes and forms that we do not see or choose to ignore that include harsh treatment, alcohol, and past experience. Military in itself has tried for many years to prevention of sexual assault from the highest level to the lowest level.

To truly help decrease sexual assault comes down to it, is basic indusial soldier task if you see something stop it or report it.

In the military as a new recruit, you are considered the bottom of the rank and have to prove your worth to the unit, company, and platoon. Over the course of new recruits, training many will experience harsh, emotional, and physical abuse to “help them become a stronger and leaner soldier”. “Notably, mid-ranking enlisted troops known as noncommissioned officers “reinforced the suggestion that hazing definitions are not sufficiently clear “says Washington post”.

During these harsh treatments, some are taunted by the “masculine stereotypes”. Harsh and taunting treatments could lead to peer pressure in proving said new recruits so called “Man Hood”. Which could destroy a new recruit’s mental state on how to see things and learn to take what he wants which could result into sexually assaulting another soldier to prove their “Man Hood” and for harsh treatment to end.

As the Army continues to grow the alcohol, related incidents increase.

Alcohol is a major issue in the military that may lead to unwelcomed circumstances. While consuming alcoholic beverages, many are unaware of how it effects the body, meaning sexual desires. When soldiers drink alcohol, their sexual desires will also increase, which cloud the mind of the soldier, and misjudge the victims’ idea of consensual sex. Most sexual assaults in the army revolve around the subject and victim who have been both under the influence of alcohol. On average between 40-75% of sexual assaults are from both the victim and the subject drinking alcohol. Hence, why alcohol is a main reason of sexual assaults in the Army and why we as a whole need to addressee the importance of how to drink alcohol properly,

Within the military, many soldiers who enlist do not tell of their experience about child abuse. Studies has shown “Among 747 males the risk of being a perpetrator was positively correlated with reported sexual abuse victim experiences. The overall rate of having been a victim was 35% for perpetrators and 11 % for non-perpetrators.”, says The Royal College of Psychiatrists. Within the military, we have no clue who was past victims to get the soldiers the help they need. Without the help soldiers need they may indulge in self-medication, which could lead to drinking or find ways to gain the soldiers power back that was taken from them as a child.

As the military continues to grow so does sexual harassment. We as a group of military professionals need to better understand how to prevent sexual harassment. For the military to know better they need to teach on how to control leadership harassment, control on soldiers drinking, and past experience. The military can and will conquer sexual assault between one another and make the Army more proficient. As the saying goes “One team, one fight, we will never leave a battle buddy behind”.
