Most people do not see that racism is an issue, but racism is a huge problem in society. Racism has caused a lot of pain and destruction throughout history as it is to blame for most of the hate in our society. There are many possible solutions to reduce racism and limit the negative effects such as government regulations, better education, and create more awareness. Recently, there has been a new illness called COVID-19, it can affect your lungs and airways.

It’s caused by a virus called coronavirus. The disease has spread globally since 2019, resulting in the 201920 coronavirus pandemic. It is from bats to human beings, believed to have originated from China.

In 2003, there was also a respiratory disease caused by a coronavirus infection. It is called severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS for short. It is extremely rare and lasted from several days to weeks. The death rate was about 9% to 12% of those diagnosed. In people over age 65, the death rate was higher than 50% and the illness was milder in younger people.

Both SARS and Covid-19 originated from China. It is said that the coronavirus is passed from bats to people and when one person has it, they can give the virus to two or three other people. For SARS, if you compare it to COVID-19, it had a much higher fatality rate. It’s about 10 per cent.

For COVID-19, it’s now two per cent, but in some countries like Italy, it rises to around eight to 10 per cent. With the new and advanced technology we have now compared to what we had in the year 2002-2004, it seems like Covid-19 is worse than SARS.

In addition to that, the virus is deadly, and the most dangerous part is that many people don’t show symptoms of the virus. During the SARS outbreak, it almost ruined the Chinese communities in Canada. Racism is everywhere, but the SARS outbreak gave people a chance to enhance it. People would go around telling Chinese people to go away because ‘all Chinese people have SARS.’ Throughout history, people have always been scared of dying. During times like these, people should be helping each other out, instead of making hurtful racist comments. Those comments cause people to feel excluded and invalid. At that time, people started staying away from Chinese restaurants and grocery stores, and businesses in Toronto’s Chinatown reported their customers dropping by 70 to 90 per cent. Now, with Covid-19 going around, Chinese people are having to repear the same situation and will have to go through the same discrimination again.

Except, this time around it’s made so much worse by social media. Anyone can say anything they want, whether it’s trying to take advantage of it for views and making these fake claims, or it’s people like this who are spreading a racist message. At the time of the SARS outbreak, cellphones and texting were not used as much. However now, social media is everywhere and it’s helping to amplify existing prejudice. On January 29th, Toronto’s mayor, John Tory, and health officials took a stand against xenophobia toward Chinese Canadian. Tory said the city supports the Chinese Canadian community by releasing accurate information as often as necessary. And “we stand up as we are all doing here today to stop misleading or damaging or stigmatizing comments or actions that are directed toward any members of our community, ” he said. Discrimination is never acceptable. It is not helpful, and spreading misinformation does not offer anyone protection.

Racism is bad because it is a major cause of violent and repressive behavior, which is an obvious and inherent trigger for all kinds of very bad social consequences. Spreading hurtful and false information does not help the situation. Therefore, just like what Tory said, we must stop making racist comments/actions. Many people are unaware how constant racism has been throughout the years. It is important to understand the problems of racism because it is relevant to society. Racism is very real, and people should become aware of it. Racism is a struggle, and to this day, it has continued to be a major issue in our society. The colour of someone’s skin alters how a person is perceived by society.
