somnopplysningen.se has an article all about dreams. They say that dreaming is something everybody has in common. In the article, you can also read that dreams always have been a popular subject among humans. It also says that dreams have more impact and different meanings in separate cultures.

Some cultures see dreams as a distinct universe where you can meet your ancestors and other nonliving things, meanwhile people in the west culture didn’t seem to care that much about them.

The article continues with bringing up what we humans tend to dream about. Their studies has shown that we humans often dream about places that we are familiar with and people we know. But that is where the logical part ends.

Dreams lack physical limitations. That means that the possibilities are endless. But later on in the text, it said that their studies found out another very interesting about human dreams. The studies detected that over 80% of their participants had dreamt about negative things, like bad luck and aggressiveness.

This conclusion is actually quite contrary to what we actually think about the dream world.

Later on in the text it says that our dreams tend to be about an impression we had gotten the day before.

Nearly half of all dreams have some sort of connection to activities from the day before. That explains why we often dream about things that makes a big impact on us. If you are involved in a war, your dreams will most likely be about that a little more often than usual.

I feel like The Matrix movie tried to capture this dreamworld with all the strange happenings and plot in general. The Matrix and dreams also has a lot in common. They use the same logic which in this case means no logic at all and both of them can be called a simulation.

According to an essay called “A Matter of Perception”, Studymoose.com is it captivating looking back over 2 000 years of including Plato’s works, to compare with the more modern works such as blockbuster movie “The Matrix”. In The Matrix we see a complex world created by machines, exposing the human race in virtual world. This virtual world allows the human race to perceive a reality around them, a world built with intention of building people from the ultimate reality that what they perceive to believe is an illusion. Plato in his famous cave allegory makes great connection to the perceptions of reality and illusions.

In Plato’s allegory he talks about prisoners who from their birth have been tightened to a wall, and the only thing they the can see is the shadows cast on a wall of puppets representing humans and animals.

That would lead to that the prisoners perceive the shadows of the artificial objects as real, according to Plato. Neo inte The Matrix has very much in common with these prisoners. Both will eventually find out the truth about the real world. The cave in the allegory by Plato can be used as a simile to The Matrix for Neo. The Matrix is like the illusions from the shadows of the puppets in the cave. It leaves its prisoners completely ignorant from to the fact that the world as they know it isn’t real. “Then in every such prisoners would deem reality to be nothing else than the shadows of the artificial objects”(Plato).

Another thing that the allegory by Plato and The Matrix have in common is:

Just like in The Matrix, the relationship between Neo and Morpheus, does Plato’s allegory include some sort of rescuer that will show them the actual reality. In both stories the protagonists (Neo and the prisoners) refuse to believe the truth they are shown. These shadows represented the reality Neo believed in, and the prisoners believed the shadows to be the reality.

There is a major difference between The Matrix and Plato’s allegory though. In The Matrix, the prisoners aren’t physically tied while conscious by chains but instead mentally trapped in an unconscious state of a perceived reality that is pleasant. While the cave on the other hand makes the enslavement to the shadows look very funereal and gloomy. This leads to the prisoners viewing of the illusions being tightened, chained and completely left behind from the outside world. This also goes the other way around. The outside world of the cave in Plato’s allegory is bright and peaceful meanwhile the real world in The Matrix is a post-apocalyptic world that could be likened to a junkyard with no sun and light. That means that you have to get into the dark to escape The Matrix. That could be the reason why Neo refuses to believe that the world shown is the real one.
