Michael Bamshad and Steve Olson published this article in Scientific American in 2003. They describe and summarize many approaches to studying genetic variation within and among groups of humans. One of the two big questions we will address in this course is “does any meaningful biological difference exist among human races?” We will find the biological concepts and techniques Bamshad and Olson discuss will be very helpful. Please read the article and make a list of terms and concepts that are new or unclear to you. Send me that list, along with any questions you have about the article, as the second assignment for this week. Along with the terminology survey (the first assignment) this will enable me to tailor the course to your needs and ensure a successful, intellectually pleasant experience for everyone.
