This book, which is commonly known as the Blue Book, set down the duties and responsibilities of NCOs. Part of this book is still in use today in FM 22-5 Drill and Ceremonies. To be an NCO to me means to live the Army Values every day no matter what the situation is. The seven Army Values are: Loyalty “Bear true faith and allegiance to the U.

S. constitution, the Army, and other soldiers. ” Duty “Fulfill your obligations. ” Respect “Treat people as they should be treated. ” Selfless Service “Put the welfare of the nation, the Army and your subordinates above your own. Honor “Live up to the army values. ” Integrity “Do what’s right legally and morally. ” and Personal Courage “Face fear, danger or adversity (physical or moral). ” Loyalty to me means to stick by your soldiers and if they make a mistake help them learn from it so that they can better themselves.

Also it means to protect the US constitution and what it stands for and to stick together with your unit and with all soldiers in the Army. Duty to me to do whatever it is that needs to be done regardless of whether or not you agree with the task or want to do it. It means to suck it up and get the job done.

Also it means to take initiative and do what you know needs to get done even if you havent been told to do it just yet. Selfless Service means to put your soldiers needs above your own. It means that before you go home every day you should make sure your soldiers are tracking whats going on the next morning, what the uniform is, and to generally make sure that they arent having any issues that may inhibit the mission at hand and to fix whatever issues there might be. Honor basically means to live up to all of these Army Values. Respect means to be considerate to others and to respect their rank regardless of the situation.

You don’t have to like the person but their rank needs to be respected. Also to me it’s like the Golden Rule of Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Integrity means to do the right thing no matter whos watching. Even if doing the right thing isnt the more popular thing to do we as NCOs need to do it anyway because we are supposed to be setting the standard for other soldiers. Personal Courage means to face your physical and moral fears. Physical courage is overcoming fears of bodily harm while your duty. Moral courage is overcoming your fears while doing the right thing no matter how unpopular the right thing may be.
