This new role focused on developing commercial applications that provided management’s end users with predefined management reports that would provide managers with the information they needed to make decisions. In the 1970s, these predefined management reports were not sufficient to meet many of the management’s decision-making requirements. Examples: product prices, profitability forecasts and risk analysis systems. In the 1980s, the introduction of microcomputers in the workplace marked the beginning of a new era, which had a profound effect on organizations. The rapid development of the processing power of the microcomputer (for example the Intel Pentium microprocessor), the application software packages (for example Microsoft Office) and the telecommunications networks have given rise to the phenomenon of computer science for the end user. End users can now use their IT resources to meet their business needs instead of waiting for indirect support from a centralized department of business information services. Furthermore, there has been progress in the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to corporate information systems. With less need for human intervention, knowledge workers could be released to handle more complex tasks.
