Through the character of Nina, Kapur conveys the notion that the economic empowerment of a woman helps her to achieve an independent identity and ushers determination in a woman to take her firm decisions and manages her personal issues all by herself. Her loneliness instead making her weak makes her virile enough from inside to manage her life on her own terms. Nina connects herself from her original root and equally success to find her own identity in the land of new culture. Because Nina finds no reason to return back to India, she understands that any place in the earth is the same for her.

The second chapter throws light on feminism as it is believed that feminism is the movement which support woman to protest against the male oriented world. When the feminism re-awakens in the early 1970s many feminists began to realise that woman rights alone could not free woman from sexual abuse and oppression. But Kapur asserts that there is a lack of the personal freedom, Intellectual starvation, economic expression, commercial exploitation, domestic oppression, and sexual harassment continued to shakes the lives of an individual woman. Kapur tries to highlight the notion that women are not mere objects for male pleasure. The novelist has critically examined the patriarchal ideology is assimilated into the character of Ananda despites he lives in Canada, he tries to control his wife both sexually and emotionally. Nina does not want to be a mere doll in the hands of her husband. Finally she made an endeavour to establish her individual identity by challenging the taboos and the social norms.
