It offers continuing education programs, seminars, and scientific meetings for pre-medical and current medical students to help excel during and after medical school. The American Academy of Pediatrics consists of over 41,000 members and 30 committees who work together to further the development of pediatric medicine. The American Academy of Pediatrics also develops recommendations for children on topics such as media use, physical activity, etc.

e.g., children ages six and older should have at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day. This website will be useful for my research because it provides not only information on pediatric medicine and pediatric medical degrees, but also tips and tools for all pediatricians to use, both aspiring and current. It answers most of the basic questions asked about pediatrics and provides in-depth information about the meaning of being a pediatrician.

The website for the Brody School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics at East Carolina University provides all of the information needed to earn a medical degree in pediatrics at East Carolina. The website offers resources and information about pediatric organizations, faculty, specific sections of pediatric medicine, post-graduate residencies, admission requirements and more for both current and aspiring medical students. This website is a great tool for my research because it lays out guidelines for those wanting to attend specifically the Brody School of Medicine or another medical school.

It also provides steps and other information about post-graduate residencies for those rearing the end of their medical school journey. I plan to earn my medical degree at East Carolina, so this website is the perfect tool to use in my career research. Mitchell, Timothy. Phone Interview, 30 Jan. 2019. I contacted Dr. Timothy Mitchell via email and scheduled an interview, then he called me and we conducted the interview. The purpose of this interview was to get more insight into the field of pediatrics from a decorated and renowned pediatrician. Dr. Mitchell is a two time Board Certified Pediatrician and Neonatologist. He earned his medical degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in 1994 and went on to complete his residency in 1997 at the University of Mississippi with a specialty in pediatrics. Upon completion of both medical school and residency, Dr. Mitchell moved on to complete a Pediatric Hematology-Oncology fellowship at the University of Mississippi in 2000 and then a Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellowship at Duke University in 2005. He answered my questions on how to survive medical school, finding employment after medical school, and what he thought was the biggest problem in the medical field today: Childhood Obesity.

Dr. Mitchell explained that from the outside looking in, you might think that Americans are making great efforts to reduce childhood obesity, but from the inside looking out, the efforts being made aren’t enough. I consider Dr. Mitchell to be a great aspect for my research because he not only completed medical school and residency but moved on to complete two fellowships at one of the best medical schools in the nation. Phone Interview 30 Jan. 2019. I conducted a phone interview with Dr. Christopher Young, who has been working with my mother since 2004. Dr. Young received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and completed his residency with a specialty in pediatrics at the University of Florida – Shands Children Hospital. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Young took an internship and a fellowship with a specialty in pediatrics at the University of Florida – Shands Children Hospital. He answered a lot of my questions about the transition from undergraduate school to medical school, having to make tough calls regarding patients, and his favorite thing about being a pediatrician: the kids.

He explained to me that the road to becoming a pediatrician is not an easy feat, but helping kids made it all worth it. When a patient comes in needing to be treated by a doctor, most outcomes are good, except when they are not. Dr. Young told me a few heartbreaking stories about some of the worse cases he has ever seen and how he got through them. This interview gave me more insight into the medical field and how it might affect me personally. Then, the book moves on to talk about dealing with the stress of finishing the final year of medical school and what to do after completing residency and internships. This book will definitely be beneficial to me, once I near the end of medical school since it lays out a lot of things I needed to know about becoming a pediatrician. Each chapter is a different story told from the perspective of the doctor. The stories range from funny encounters to sad narratives about terminally-ill patients, all while reminding the reader how special being a pediatrician is. This book gives a real life look into the triumphs and tragedies of a pediatrician. The author, the American Academy of Pediatrics, is an association created by the American Board of Pediatric and they have written over 150 books covering 20 different topics. The editor, Dr. Mohsen Ziai, was world renown and highly respected pediatrician who passed in early 2013. Ziai received his medical degree from John Hopkins School of Medicine and completed his pediatric residency at the prestigious Boston Children’s Hospital. He received many awards and authored many books and articles during his life. I believe this book will act as a great resource to me because it tells the stories of the happiest and most dreadful days as a pediatrician. This book reminded me of how much I want to be a pediatrician, which is why it will be very beneficial to me as I conduct my research.
