Selection -> Organization -> Interpretation -> Negotiation

As part of Selection Phase, we tend to notice or to ignore things as a result of different factors such as how intense or repetitious one stimulus is.

For example if you take a ride with your car and inside the cabin you have also two other people with different cultural background, job profession or interests they might be attracted or notice different things than your personal selection in terms of perception.

An architect might notice the architecture of buildings, liberal arts one the graffiti on the walls and you as a driver may be interested in the amount of parking lots available because of time pressure and need of parking your car as soon as you get to your destination. This has to do with the Selection Process, and specifically with Motives (Adler & Proctor, 2019), which in our case of the driver is the amount of Time and Emergency he or she has on their own.

“Taking the Test”

Implicit Association Test (IAT)

(A measurement of attitudes and beliefs by Harvard University) we classify people according to their appearance: male or female, beautiful or ugly, heavy or thin, young or old” (Adler & Proctor, 2019, p. 106)

Personally I took 3 or more tests in order to see if I have an implicit perception over Gender, Career and Age factors.

First I took a test focused on association between Female and Male with Career and Family.

As my results at the Debrief suggested that there is “little or no automatic association” with the terms Female/Male and Career/Family then I got a relief because I initially had the perception of associating men primary with Job Careers and women with typical family oriented notion and less interest in career goals.

Here are some results on average:

“Stereotyping”

Yes·

“We use that scheme to make generalizations and predictions about members of the groups who fit the categories we use.” (Adler & Proctor, 2019, p. 106)

In our case of women and men and selecting roles upon their position in the society has to do with Social Roles related to Gender and Occupational Roles. A different profession maybe changes also the perception of someone interfering inside certain work environment or education sector (Adler & Proctor, 2019, p. 118).

Taking the 2nd test

So let’s return to the age factor.

Performing a test about ‘associations between old and young people’, relating them with bad or good made me look not “nice” at all according to my initial thoughts.

‘My data suggest a strong automatic preference

For Young people over Old people.’

Actually but simultaneously unfortunately, I am included in the 30 percentage of which they associate Old people with bad and have preference on Young associating them with good.

Here are the results on average answer sheets:

Conclusion

Taking into consideration the above results, indications may vary but so perceptions or interpretations do the same. Giving credit or have an implicit preference to the ones who look young or beautiful (good) does not mean that this interpretation corresponds to the real thing, person or case you meet before your eyes.

Referring to the Halo Effect, “the tendency to form an overall positive impression of a person on the basis of one positive characteristic” (Adler & Proctor, 2019, p. 121), sometimes gives wrong interpretations but to keep an open mind on that can help you later on.
