This, role-plays I feel much better and more confident as compared to my last interaction, aspects of my performance were: my verbal and nonverbal communication was improved, I was smiling which is very important to build a trusted relationship between me and the patient. There were some areas I am still needed to focus on, such as a patient centered approach.

During the roleplay, while I managed to introduce myself professionally with good use of kinesics regarding building rapport with the patient and paralanguage, I failed to maintain proper haptics, I use jargon words like oral hygiene while explaining her a mouth cleaning routine, which is taught us not to use while communicating with patients.

I also didn’t adjust my chair with the same level to maintain proper eye contact with the patient.

Briggs et al. stated that using jargon-free or plain English improves communication with patients and also helps in avoiding potential misunderstandings that can lead to complaints. A dental indemnity body has recommended dental professionals to use jargon-free, plain English when speaking to patients.

After much reflection and input from the literature, I came to the realisation that good communication skills are the key to building a good rapport with the patient.

This roleplay was valuable for me to understand the importance of using a simple language while speaking with the patients. I believe that my greeting the patient with a smile and asking about her oral hygiene is a good way to build the comfort and trust level between me and my patient, I showed the patient, what is the perfect way to clean her mouth by using the models and offered her few free samples of dental products was a good strategy to follow, in doctor/patient centered approach.

In this interaction I found that I started the conversation in a good way but the flow wasn’t good, and I didn’t give her a chance to speak, it’s only me who was talking mostly, and I didn’t paraphrase the patient’s concerns which are very important, to make sure that I understood every aspect of the patient’s concern.

My main goal is to focus on improving my verbal and non-verbal communication skills. In my next interaction, I will focus on working on my patient centered approach by improving my active listening skills, be more mindful while interacting with the patients, I also feel that I need improvements in my sitting posture. I will use simple or jargon-free English while communication with the patient. I will paraphrase the patient’s concern to make sure I completely understand all his/her concerns and then began to answer.

In my opinion, this course will help me to be confident and ready to deal with the real situation at the end of the day. Overall my principal objective is acquiring skills to build a strong patient-doctor relationship to give the best possible care to my patients.
