Taking Care of My First Pet Free Essay Example

Growing up, I have always wanted a puppy. I begged my parents for them to take me to a pet store and buy me a puppy but I could never convince them. I have even written long letters requesting for a pet and a huge essay on why I needed one. It was torture; how my friends always talked about funny and interesting stories they have had with their pets, while I have never even had a pet of my own.

However after years of begging, my parents finally gave in. They allowed me to take care of one of their friend’s dogs as a trial to see if I could handle my very own pet.

Not only was this task one of the hardest things I have ever done, I was barely able to pull through it. The first day my parents’ friend dropped off their puppy Boo, everything seemed almost perfect. He was super friendly, loved playing, did not bite anyone and he was potty trained.

It almost felt like I was meant to have a puppy because it seemed as if nothing could ever go wrong; until, the very next day when Boo started becoming a little hostile. Boo became a bit more energetic and loud than when I first saw him.

It was starting to become a little difficult to control him and play with him because he was simply too loud and had too much energy. He started growling at certain people in my household and he did not seem as friendly as he was the day before.

It was then, that I started realizing that raising my own puppy would never be as easy as I thought it would be. I had to prove to my parents that I could handle taking care of a puppy on my own before they could even begin to fathom buying me any kind of pet.

On the third day, I had to give Boo his very first bath. It was tiring and I was exhausted by the time I was done. Boo would not stay still and he got water everywhere, which I had to clean up afterwards. I was drained out after spending almost an hour trying to give him a bath and all I wanted to do was sleep. However, I could not sleep until I took him outside for a walk. By the end of the 7th day, I had to give Boo back to his owners. They asked me how everything went, and I explained to them how difficult it was.

They laughed and then told me that taking care of a dog isn’t an easy task at all. It always takes a lot of your time, just like taking care of a baby: it consumes almost all of your time and you need to give it lots of attention and love. ” Before this whole event, I could honestly say I thought I would be able to handle taking care of a dog. It seemed so easy and my friends sought it out to be an enjoyable task. While it was enjoyable in some ways, it was definitely not easy and even taking care of Boo for a week was one of the hardest jobs I’ve ever had to do.
