The earlier Adena burial sites contain practical objects but the late burial mounds contain much elaborate types of artifacts. These artifacts may be the evidence of the revolution of their culture. It was the evidence showing social hierarchy. Exotic goods in a big and elaborate burial mounds were displayed. These only show that the Adena culture had progressed. It had been apparent that the trade system had evolved into a more sophisticated way. This is also the reason why there is a debate of whether Adena were immigrants or a locale of the Chesapeake region.

There are Mid-Atlantic sites that are identified as Adena because of the presence of the Adena religious complex like the Ohio tubular pipes, thick-walled copper beads, and of course the complex burial mounds (Chase-Dunn & Hall, 2007). This transition is because of diffusion or immigration to Illinois (Fiedel, 1992). The Adena people and culture had of the Early Woodland Period had enriched the American culture and had paved the way to a great civilization. This has contributed to the present culture of America. The mounds are great significant because it had helped understand the history of American people.
