The Intrigue, Virtuosity, and Advancement Free Essay Example
Don’t we love the new Samsung Note 9 and the incredible iPhone X? These newest forms of powerful and modern technology really make life exciting. Although while the topic is still abroad, what really is the definition of technology? Isn’t technology also a computer, tablet, smartwatch, a printer, and even a calculator? Well through some research the definition of the word technology can be split up into “tech,” meaning art or craft, and “ology,” denoting a subject or study of interest (Oxford Dictionaries English).
The original definition is obviously adapted to the items that held a new meaning to the word technology. Therefore an interpretation can be made that the word technology overtime, is referred to anything electronically advanced, like phones or laptops. The assumption is that technology is a unique word with a connotation and denotation that contradict each other to some degree, but is derived from the same original definition and as a result the resolution about how the present meaning came to be.
Early 17th century: from Greek tekhnologia “systematic treatment”, from teknē ‘art, craft’ + -logia “denoting a subject or study of interest (Oxford Dictionaries English). The word technology in the 1600s overall was the study of craft or art. This original meaning is far from the electronic advances that we have today. Along the course of history technology’s meaning had to be and probably was adapted in some way. So the question is; how does technology differ throughout the course of time? The answer, it doesn’t.
Technology never once in all the centuries its been used even before it became a word in the dictionary has changed its denotation but the connotation varies due to the perspective of whomever is viewing it at a certain time period. Food for thought.
There are three defining categories to the word technology. There is the intrigue, the virtuosity and advancement impact. The intrigue part is really simple, technology has to be of interest, someone needs to be curious or fascinated by it to eventually use it. Technology has always been a growing and fascinating concept and it had a very important role to play. By virtue of his nature as a toolmaker, man has therefore been a technologist from the beginning, and the history of technology encompasses the whole evolution of humankind (Buchanan). This quotes just emphasizes the importance of the actual use of technology.
The virtuosity is a slightly different approach from its counterpart intrigue, the virtuosity part of technology is the artistic part of technology. Technology needs to be a craft, a form of art, one can best put it as a craft is the actual tangible work of the art which is the expression of one’s feelings (S 2011). The Lascaux cave painter had to figure out how to make his or her media, mineral-based pigments, carving tools, etc, using whatever materials were available 16,000 years ago. These were state of the art technology at the time (Jaeger). Technology stated in the previous sentence refers to the artistic portion of technology in its earlier forms.
Technology’s other part of its definition is not explicitly stated but does include its advancement impact. The advancement impact is strictly the way the item in question helps better the human society or makes human tasks and life easier, in other words a form of solution. The three most important inventions developed during the decade included the automobile, the airplane, and the radio. Each new device transformed American life by greatly expanding the average citizen’s opportunities for travel and communication (U*X*L American Decades). Technology came in forms, but its purpose seeked to make human life easy and overall better.
The present connotation of the definition of technology is the newest electronic updates. The past connotation of technology is the advancement of human life in an interesting form of art. As you look through how these connotations seem different its denotation remains the same. Technology is what most of the world revolves on in the 21st century. Technology doesn’t always look the same, it comes in different shapes, sizes, and forms.
Technology overtime has adapted to its present circumstances but overall and basis denotation and characteristics never really changed. Technology is the study or subject of art or craft the betters human life through its use.
