President Trump famously announced, “Trade wars are good and easy to win.” Not surprisingly, his remark created a firestorm of debate, with almost all economists and even many Republican legislators and business people arguing that President Trump merely is wrong.
Economically and historically, there is plenty of evidence to back up the critics (consider, for example, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act on 1930). At the same time, there is some evidence that Trump’s tough position is producing results: some countries have, in fact, offered to negotiate trade concessions in return for waivers on the recently imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. In short, the issue is complicated because it is not just economic, but also very much political.
For this assignment, I would like you to write a letter directly to President Trump. In your letter, you must explain why, despite some seemingly positive results, that there are significant tradeoffs that need to be carefully considered. Your job is to give him a fuller picture of the issues.
