The essay “Why I want a wife”, By Judy Brady, explains the expectations of women from men in marriages. Brady reversed the roles of men and women in an ironic twist which sheds light on the double standards a lot of women accepted in relationships. Brady wants a wife to take care of the physical, sexual, and emotional needs. Women have many different roles in life. A very prominent role for a woman is that of a wife. A wife makes sure to take care of her families physical needs.

A wife maintains the physical needs of her husband, and also takes care of the children’s physical needs too.

She makes sure the children eat properly and are kept clean, as well as have an adequate social life with their peers. Brady states, “I want a wife to keep track of the children’s doctor and dentist appointments. And keep track of mines too. ” (paragraph 3) The wife is like the social worker for her family.

Furthermore, a wife is a caregiver of the physical, sexual, and emotional needs of her family. She must be sensitive to her husband’s sexual needs, and make sure he is satisfied. But only when he wishes to, she must be understanding when he does not want to engage in sexual activity.

As well as assume complete responsibility for birth control because he does not want more children. In spite of this she has to be receptive to him sleeping with outsiders. Brady states, “I must, after all, be able to relate to people as fully as possible.

” ( paragraph 7) However, a wife must also take care of the emotional needs of her family. She is like an emotional buffer for her husband. She has an open ear when the husband needs to discuss a difficult problem he has come across. She is a social caterer for her spouse.

She makes sure her spouses’ guests are comfortable when being entertained in her home. Brady states, “ I want a wife who will have arranged that the children are fed and ready for bed before my guests arrive so that the children do not bother us. ” (paragraph 6) She is the family therapist when she is needed emotionally. At last, Judy Brady wants a wife to take care of the physical, sexual, and emotional needs of her and her children. After all, who wouldn’t want a wife like that to hold down the fort.
